Carrefour, operating exclusively in Uganda under Majid Al Futtaim, has announced its sponsorship of the Kyambogo Ultra Challenge Run with a commitment of UGX 7 million. The run, Uganda’s premier ultra-challenge marathon, will commence on May 4, 2024, at the Kyambogo University Cricket Oval.

The 14th edition of this prestigious event serves as a platform for promoting health and fitness among Ugandans, aligning with Carrefour’s mission to enhance the well-being of the communities it serves.

The Kyambogo Ultra Challenge Run, inaugurated in 2010, stands as Uganda’s pioneer ultra-challenge marathon, drawing participants from various running clubs across Kampala and beyond. This event serves not only as a fitness benchmark but also as a stepping stone for runners aspiring to participate in continental marathons.

Christophe Orcet, Regional Director – East Africa at Majid Al Futtaim Retail, emphasized Carrefour’s dedication to community impact through initiatives like the Kyambogo Ultra Challenge Run sponsorship. Orcet stated, “We are committed to partnering with our communities to promote health and well-being, harnessing the unifying power of sports.”

Julius Nkuraija, CEO of the Kyambogo Ultra Challenge Run, expressed gratitude for Carrefour’s support, noting its instrumental role in ensuring the event’s success and fostering health awareness in Uganda. Nkuraija also hinted at future plans to incorporate an environmental cause into the run as it continues to grow and gain traction.

Carrefour’s involvement in community initiatives extends beyond this sponsorship. The “Round Up Your Bill” program, launched in 2021, has raised over UGX 290 million to support vulnerable groups in neighboring communities. Beneficiaries include Peculiar Childcare Support, Kireka Home for Disabled Children, Mulago School for The Deaf, Kiswa Primary School, Ntinda School for the Deaf, and The Noah’s Ark Village.

The sponsorship of the Kyambogo Ultra Challenge Run underscores Carrefour’s ongoing commitment to fostering healthier and more engaged communities across Uganda. This partnership underscores the importance of collaborative efforts in promoting wellness and social responsibility in the region.
